Fight Aging with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers?

by Stephanie

As we age, sadly our body ages too whether we like it or not.  This is often most visible on the hands but in particular on the face.  Whilst the rest of our body is by and large covered up, these are two areas that are the most exposed to environmental damage.  The sun, smoking, pollution, free radicals and just our repeated facial expressions over time all contribute to changes in our face.

The most visible signs of ageing are wrinkles and loss of facial volume.  Whilst we may not like the way our face changes in this way, there are things we can do to try to prevent this damage.  But what if the damage has already been done and we are unhappy with how we look?  There are ways to help – hyaluronic acid fillers now being a well tested option.

Also another sign of ageing is the weakening of bones and joints.  Diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can be excruciatingly painful for sufferers and whilst these ailments cannot be cured, again hyaluronic acid injection can be extremely effective in helping people to alleviate their symptoms.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate) is a substance which naturally occurs in the body.  It is classified as a glycosaminoglycan (or GAG) which helps to form and keep healthy the body’s cartilage by attaching itself to collagen and to elastin.

Healthy cartilage is important because it acts as a cushion for our joints and keeps them flexible.  Hyaluronic acid helps in a second way by making sure that the joints are well lubricated by ensuring a good supply of synovial fluid.

Hyaluronic acid is also vital for renewing cells and for the regulation of cell growth. It has the property of being able to bind with water thereby increasing the body’s retention of essential moisture. When we translate this to the face area in particular, we can understand how it can potentially help to maintain a fuller looking, plumper face.

How do hyaluronic acid fillers work?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are injected directly to the part of the face or body that needs to be treated - needless to say this should always be performed by a suitably qualified practitioner.

With regards to the face, hyaluronic acid fillers are suitable for smoothing out wrinkles ranging from fine lines to heavier wrinkling and also for injecting into scars (termed as scar revision) to literally fill them out and make them less visible.  The property of binding with water and attaching itself to the collagen and elastin makes the facial area injected appear fuller and in turn more youthful.

Hyaluronic acid injections can also be administered to the lip area to augment and enhance the fullness of the lips – particularly helpful for those with very thin lips or simply those wishing for a fuller pout.  Results are not permanent as the hyaluronic acid serum injected is naturally absorbed into the body, but they last about 9 months after which time repeat injections would generally be required.

Hyaluronic acid injections work in exactly the same way for the treatment of painful joints.  They simply help to keep the joint fluid healthy, retain water volume and thus to be able to cushion joints much more effectively.  On study showed pain and symptom relief was gained by 80% of participants and the results lasted for up to a year.  After that time, regular injections would be recommended to maintain the level of relief.

The side effects of hyaluronic acid injections vary but usually the most that occurs is slight bruising and swelling at the point of injection.

What the press say

Hyaluronic acid has recently been hailed by the press as the fountain or the elixir of youth and its popularity is increasing.  This is because, as explained, it can be very effective at treating facial imperfections and improving skin texture and smoothness through the administration of Hyaluronic acid fillers.

Hyaluronic acid can also be taken orally and it has been documented that people living in a Japanese village who consumed large quantities of a root vegetable containing high levels of HA seemed to have a very long life expectancies.

In conclusion

The fountain of youth or not – HA fillers could be the solution you’re looking for.  But, as with every procedure, be it medical or cosmetic, you should research your subject carefully.  If you think HA fillers could be right for you, research and locate a reliable professional in your area for further advice, or try a more 'home-based' solution.
